What teams say about abstractBIM

Mario Lichy

You are a true wizard. It is the first time that I was able to import a complex IFC model into IDA ICE without any problems. I am thrilled and can recommend abstractBIM without reservation.

Manuel Frey

The use of abstractBIM was the 'enabler' to be able to evaluate competition entries from different architects with our 'Early Stage Design' tool. This allowed us to benchmark the projects regarding return on investment, construction costs, comfort, energy consumption, and daylight use within a few days. A solid basis for decision-making for the building owner - with minimal manual effort! That is digital process intelligence.

Building simulation is a very helpful tool for Anex in dimensioning and optimizing building services equipment. We see that more and more architects can provide BIM models and we are committed to a better information exchange through modeling. For this reason, we have optimized the BIM2SIM process, where Abstract has helped us to improve the workflow.

How abstractBIM works

1

Upload the IFC you received

Status Quo: You receive an IFC model that you didn't build, in a state you can't predict and before you can simulate, calculate, or analyze, you'd normally fix it manually. Every time. From scratch. From now on: Ask for an IFC with IfcSpaces (the Room Geometry) and abstract it instead of remodeling it manually.

2

We rebuild the geometry

Based on the IfcSpaces, we rebuild the geometry and apply rules to fix common errors and inconsistencies. Guaranteeing data consistency and enriching the model for further use. For example, every wall knows between which two spaces it belongs to - allowing rule-based enrichment of materials, fire rating, and acoustic requirements.

Download and use it in your workflows

How teams use abstractBIM

Architectural competition · 65 submissions, one consistent dataset

A competition required all participating architects to submit an IFC space model. abstractBIM processed every submission and delivered consistent metrics across all 65 entries, regardless of how each architect modeled.

Thermal simulation · from Sketchup to IDA ICE in minutes

A simulation engineer modeled spaces in Sketchup and exported an IFC. abstractBIM normalized the geometry so they could go straight into IDA ICE. No manual fixes, no import errors.

Cooling & heating calculations · 3000 spaces, one clean input model

An HVAC planner received IFC models from multiple planners for a hospital project. abstractBIM merged and normalized the space geometry into a single consistent input model, ready for cooling and heating calculations in Solarcomputer.

Design-build offer · 5 buildings modeled and quantified in one day

From 2D plans, the spaces, windows, and doors of five multifamily buildings were modeled in a single day and when abstracted. We applied a rule-based enrichment, 40 rules derived from the building description, and delivered informed models, an Excel quantity list, and BIMcollab Zoom rules to visualize the results. The ruleset is reusable as a templatefor future projects, allowing for a workflows that save days.

Office benchmarking · identifying risk before it becomes a problem

For a developer, we benchmarked an office building against comparable projects. abstractBIM identified that the usable area to circulation space ratio was off - a risk that would have led to missing budget for the non-tenant buildout. This allowed the developer to adjust the design and making the business case feasible.

Answers about normalizing IFC models, use cases, pricing, file formats, and how to get clean models from other planners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is abstractBIM?

abstractBIM is a web-based tool that normalizes IFC models. You upload any architectural BIM file and get clean, consistent geometry back - ready for thermal simulation, quantity takeoff, or data pipelines. No manual remodeling required.

How does abstractBIM fit abstract's contrarian approach?

Every BIM tool wants you to model more detailed. abstractBIM wants you to model less — give us spaces, windows, and doors; we derive the rest automatically.

That is abstract's Produce step: disagree with detail-heavy modeling, automate geometry and data from minimal input.

What can I do with abstractBIM?

Use the model you already have - instead of redrawing it manually. abstractBIM normalizes existing IFC data for three main workflows:

  • Thermal simulation: export to IDA ICE, EnergyPlus, or Solarcomputer via gbXML
  • Quantity takeoff: consistent room areas, wall surfaces, and normalized naming in Excel
  • Data pipelines: architectural competitions, benchmarking, and portfolio analysis
How much does it cost?

Thermal simulation is always free. For quantity takeoff and data pipelines, a free trial includes 200 credits (1 credit = 1 IfcSpace). Paid projects are priced at approximately 2.5 CHF per space. For larger projects or recurring pipelines, ask for an offer.

What file formats does abstractBIM support?

Input is IFC. Output is IFC, gbXML, and Excel. No proprietary formats, no vendor lock-in.

Which simulation tools can abstractBIM be used with?

abstractBIM exports gbXML and IFC for common building energy simulation tools.

  • IDA ICE: dedicated optimized export
  • Solarcomputer: IFC → gbXML, then use Solarcomputer's tool to convert to its internal file format
  • OpenStudio: supported
  • DesignBuilder: works in some cases
  • Lesosai: supported
  • Other tools: please contact us
How do I export an IFC for abstractBIM?

The model must contain IfcSpaces. Doors and windows are optional.

By software

  • Sketchup: IFC Manager plugin
  • ArchiCAD: built-in IFC export
  • Revit: built-in IFC export
  • Vectorworks: built-in IFC export
How can I ensure I receive correct models from other planners?

Specify it in the contract. Require IFC models with IfcSpaces modeled from top of finished floor to bottom of structural ceiling. This single requirement eliminates the most common geometry errors and gives abstractBIM a clean, consistent input to work with.

Are there alternatives to abstractBIM?

The most common alternative is manual cleanup in the authoring tool - Revit, ArchiCAD, or similar. This typically takes 2 to 5 days per model and does not scale across projects.

Does abstractBIM work with Sketchup models?

Yes. Install the IFC Manager plugin, model your spaces as IfcSpaces, and export. abstractBIM handles the rest.
